This 947-acre site along Salt Creek just south of Lincoln is an ideal destination for people looking for a quiet and peaceful outdoors experience. The forest canopy includes oak, walnut, sycamore, ash, hackberry, hickory, and sycamore. It is also home to the largest sycamore tree in Illinois! Activities include boating, cross country skiing, dog training, fishing, hiking trails, and hunting.

Spitler Woods State Natural Area

This Macon County site is home to one of the largest acreages of old growth woods in central Illinois. This mesic upland forest includes red oak, sugar maple, black walnut and basswood on the hillsides and slopes. Dry mesic forest containing white oak, red oak, and shagbark hickory is present on higher elevations. Wet-mesic floodplain forest containing sycamore, hackberry and Ohio buckeye is present along the creek which flows through the nature preserve. The site has a spectacular display of spring wildflowers, including false rue anemone, wild geranium, trillium, spring beauty and mayapple.

Sangchris Lake State Park

Just southeast of Springfield, this is a home-base for enjoying outdoor activities. With over 3,000 acres and 120 miles of shoreline on Sangchris Lake, this park offers an angler’s paradise with bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish. Hunters can also enjoy waterfowl, cove, deer, squirrel, and upland seasons. Additional activities include archery, boating, camping, dog training, equestrian trails, hiking, metal detecting, and snowmobiling.
