SPRINGFIELD – On Tuesday, legislation supported by State Representative Brad Stephens (R-Rosemont) to include Illinois women’s sports teams as special state license plate options unanimously passed the House of Representatives. House Bill 4434 would add the Chicago Sky and the Chicago Red Stars, as well as the Chicago Fire Football Club as permissible logos for license plates under the Illinois Vehicle Code.
“As we begin Women’s History Month, I gladly voted for House Bill 4434 to include two women’s professional sports organizations to be proudly displayed by Illinoisans on their license plates,” said Rep. Stephens. “This will give Illinoisans the opportunity to show their support for the WNBA 2021 Champion Chicago Sky and the Chicago Red Stars. As the 20th District includes neighborhoods in Chicago, it’s also great to include three teams that call Chicago home. I’m proud to support this legislation and hope to see it signed into law soon.”
These three teams will join the Chicago Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks, Cubs, and White Sox, in addition to the St. Louis Cardinals. This legislation also removes the St. Louis Rams from the list of included teams. The St. Louis Rams relocated from St. Louis to Los Angeles in 2016.
The Chicago Sky play in the Wintrust Arena at McCormick Place and began their inaugural season in 2006. The Chicago Red Stars play at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview and were established in 2007 as a founding member of the previous Women’s Professional Soccer, now National Women’s Soccer League. The Chicago Fire Football Club play in Soldier Field and marked their inaugural season in 1997.
