CHICAGO – Next Friday, State Representative Brad Stephens is hosting a Car Seat Safety Check with the Illinois Secretary of State and Northwestern Medicine. He will be hosting this event on Friday, July 28th from 10:00 a.m. to Noon at Rep. Stephens’ District Office parking lot (5515 N. East River Rd., Chicago).
“When parenting, any opportunity to keep your child safe and put your mind at ease is always welcome,” said Rep. Stephens. “I’m glad to provide this event to help parents in the 20th District know their children will be safe in their car seats and provide that peace of mind.”
In 2020, 607 child passengers were killed in car crashes in the U.S., and 38% were not buckled up, according to the CDC. Researchers in 2011 who observed children riding in cars estimated 46% of car seats and booster seats are used incorrectly in a way that could reduce their effectiveness. The most common errors were incorrect recline angles for rear-facing car seats, loose installation for all car seats, loose harness for all car seats, harness behind child’s legs/arms/back in forward-facing car seats, improper lap belt position for booster seats, and improper shoulder belt position for booster seats.
Appointments are preferred and can be made by calling (773) 444-0611 or emailing stephens@ilhousegop.org. Constituents with questions can also call that number for additional information on the event.
