April marks Distracted Driving Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about these preventable incidents and encouraging safer habits behind the wheel. It serves as an important reminder that every driver plays a role in keeping roads safe.
Today, State Representative Brad Stephens is reminding his constituents to stay focused while driving; it is one of the simplest—and most effective—ways to protect yourself and others.
In 2024, distracted driving had devastating consequences across Illinois. According to reported data, 51 people lost their lives in crashes involving at least one distracted driver. Behind each of these numbers is a family, a community, and a life cut short far too soon—making distracted driving not just a traffic issue, but a serious public safety concern.
“Distracted driving is fatal,” said Rep. Stephens. “Let this Distracted Driving Awareness Month be a reminder to keep your eyes on the road and your focus where it belongs.”
According to a news report, the Illinois Department of Transportation is working in partnership with the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies to increase efforts this April to reduce distracted driving across the state. That means officers will be extra vigilant in watching for texting, social media use, video viewing, and other forms of distracted driving.
